When Macquarie University Art Gallery curators appealed for the return of a lost 1950s painting ahead of an exhibition this month, they doubted it would still exist. The curators and Chris Williams — the son of the prominent Sydney artist Wilmotte Williams — made the call in the Northern District Times last month. Mrs Williams lived at Eastwood and was among the artists known as the Northwood Group, who produced many landscape paintings. The university is planning an exhibition of Mrs Williams’ works, but was missing an important piece – her painting of an area of Marsfield when it was market gardens and farms.
